New research has found the Apple iPhone is the most reliable smartphone on the market, outperforming rival models made by Samsung, Nokia and Motorola by some distance. The study, carried out by the consumer electronics support and troubleshooting website FixYa, used a huge amount of data to compare the iPhone to models such as the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Nokia Lumia 820, eventually concluding that Apple’s product was by far the most reliable.

Data from 722,558 problem reports listed on the FixYa site by consumers was combined with market share information collected by Stat Counter in order to product a ‘reliability score’ for each smartphone. The results for each smartphone manufacturer – with a combined market share of 72.51 per cent - were as follows:

  • Apple products – reliability score of 3.47
  • Samsung products – reliability score of 1.21
  • Nokia products  – reliability score of 0.68
  • Motorola products– reliability score of 0.13

The results showed that not only was Apple 25 times more reliable than the poorest performer, Motorola, but also that the manufacturer is a massive 187 per cent more reliable than Samsung, its nearest rival. The battle between Apple and Samsung smartphones for sales and market share has been heating up for some time, but reliability appears to be one area in which Apple has triumphed.

Explaining the study, the CEO and founder of FixYA, YanivBensadon said:

“Smartphones are consistently being compared on a case-by-case basis, but no one has looked at the overall trends across a manufacturer''s entire smartphone line,”

“Our newest FixYa report looks at lines like the iPhone, Galaxy, or Lumia, and through a careful analysis of issues versus market share, we’ve been able to directly compare manufacturers using a reliability score. The result is an accurate and fair method of a scaled approach to fairly compare these top companies to truly see who is the most reliable, and who is barely even competing.”

The FixYa Reliability Report could be a very useful tool for those buying new 3G and 4G phones, and not only because it goes compares brands’ product lines as a whole rather than comparing one smartphone model to another. The report also offers in-depth information about each brand and notes the common complaints from users for each one. For example, users of Samsung smartphones apparently complain of their devices getting too hot and the battery running out too quickly, as well as issues with microphones and speakers. Apple users, meanwhile, have problems with customisability, connecting to Wi-Fi and battery life on their smartphones.
